A Short History of Port Washington

Port Washington began as farmland and fishing grounds for the Lenape people, later becoming a small colonial settlement known as Cow Neck. For centuries it remained a quiet peninsula of farms, oyster beds, and waterfront trade.

In the late 1800s to early 1900s, the area transformed into part of Long Island’s famous Gold Coast. Wealthy industrialist families built grand waterfront estates in Sands Point, several of which still stand today at the Sands Point Preserve. The elegance and glamour of this era inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald’s depiction of “East Egg” in The Great Gatsby.

As the estates were subdivided and the LIRR expanded, Port Washington grew into the lively, welcoming community it is today — a perfect blend of shoreline beauty, historic charm, and small-town warmth.
